The Arauco War was a long conflict between the Spanish colonizers and the Mapuche people, mainly in the Araucanía region of Chile. The conflict began as a reaction to the Spanish conquerors' attempt to establish cities and force the Mapuches to become their subjects. Later on, it evolved into phases that included long sieges, slave-hunting expeditions, looting, punitive expeditions, and Spanish attempts to secure their lost territories. A turning point in the war was the Battle of Curalaba in 1598, which led to the establishment of a clear border between the Spanish domains and the independent Mapuche territory.
